I just read a great article about a group called The Compact, that agreed not to purchase anything new during the year 2006.

One member said "It is about being aware of the excesses of consumer culture and the fact we are drawing down our resources and making people miserable around the world."

So, what ONE item would be your last new item?
(Besides food and personal care items like medicine and soap)

medications and pet food and litter don't count right?

Nothing really substantive probably drapes for my computer room as the ones I've got are starting to look ugly and I've had them since forever.

I rarely buy big purchases unless something dies on me anyway. I don't really need new clothes or shoes, or makeup and I don't really need ipods etc. My cd player works fine.

You get to a certain age and you really don't need that much anymore.

A car. Try living in most parts of America without one, like I do. But I probably won't buy it new.
