I have a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3. I think it might be shocks, it also squeaks going over bumps. It has the rattleing noise going between 20 and 50mph. How much do you think it will cost and where would you go?

Probably something on the exhaust. The catalytic converter has a heat shield around it and it gets loose and rattles. Also, the squeak may be coming from the strut top centering ring. The grease dries up and they get squeaky. There is a kit for them that is about 30 bucks. Probably 200 in labor. Good luck.

It could be the engine misfiring. That would cause the car to shake and rattle on acceleration when the engine's lugging. If the spark plugs have never been changed, you might check to see if they're due for replacement. The acceleration condition you describe puts a lot of load on the engine which makes it hard to fire the spark plugs. So something in your ignition may need a tune up.

The rattling might be a broken catalytic converter unit. Automobile parts, accessories, and labor vary in price. The squeek can be anything--amongst what you mentioned you can add exhaust mountings and catalytic converter.

I would go to the mechanic, and explain what it's doing. He would put it up on the lift and find the problems for you, and once he knows he will tell you what it will cost. Or, you could ask here, but since I can't see your car from here, I can't tell you. Bring it in in the morning and I'll have a look.

The "ratteling" noise is pre-combustion, a condition caused by incorrect ignition timing, or a too-hot engine. assuming that the engine is not too hot, I would have to say that you need to try some higher octane gas.

could be a heat shield or even spark knock. Try using a higher grade of gas for a while and see if that does anything if not then probably not spark knock.

It sounds like the heat sheild. It shouldn't cost any thing for a mechanic to just tighten it or remove it.
