As a teenager I had a very volatile temper, and, much to my parents' great annoyance, often wished evil for others who I felt had wronged me.

When I was 16 in Bombay, India, I drove once without a licence and accidentally grazed a parked taxi's fender with mine. An altercation followed in which the driver slapped me once or twice and shook me up "to teach me a lesson". I then wished (under my breath, of course) that he would have a more severe accident himself. And it happened less than a minute later before my own eyes. A double-decker bus smashed his bonnet. I remember our eyes met briefly and I smirked. He was too dazed to react.

I kept this incident to myself. Not the accident part, because my dad's car was badly scratched too; but that I wished something evil for someone. Because then I would have received a severe thrashing -- not for damaging the car, but for wishing evil.

Fifty years have passed and I am remembering this incident of all others. Triggered by your question. Looking back, do I regret it? Not at all. He deserved it for bullying a 16-year-old boy, even if the boy was clearly at fault.

But there was a lesson in this for me too. From that day till this, I haven't wished evil for any one, not even if I've been greatly wronged. That incident refomed me at least in this one respect. God does work in mysterious ways.
