Depending on what you're selling, I would say, get educated on what your product/service is right away. One of the things any potential buyer will respect in a salesperson is knowledge.
Another is personal experience. If you are able to buy said product/service for your own use and can testament to how good it is (truthfully), that is also a plus.
To complete this trifecta, an upbeat, helpful personality is major key. Don't be cheesy, don't be pushy - but definitely be enthusiastic, cheerful, and helpful - even if you don't make the sale.

It depends whether you want to sell face to face or online.
If you want to sell face to face then then you should be able to talk properly and convince your customer.
