No they are not related. Their legends were born centuries apart. Cupid was a Deity in Mythology represented in the form of a human who shoots his human targets with an arrow which contains the power of love . The Love Bug is an entity with no physical shape who infects it's human targets with the essence of love. This power is said to be airborne and invisible. Both however are said to be responsible for two people falling in love.

Do you mean a Kissing Bug? Those bite you.

Lovebugs (at least how I know them) are nasty insects that aren't too bad in their mating pairs (yes, they're mating)...but they fly over roads in giant swarms. Hence, giant slimy bug smash messes on your car.

Lovebug pheromones have a component that is also found in...gasoline exhaust. So, they fly over highways, lookin' for love in all the wrong places. SPLAT! In flagrante delicto...smashed on the car-o.

What about Herbie the Love Bug? No arrows...that I know of.
