Yes there is a nurse shortage because they are not hiring because of the debts!! The shortage is also due to the closure of hospitals or wards, and as a result the nurses were struck off!! What is hard to understand??
I believe the NHS is coming to an end!! Also I believe that a large proportion of the debts are a result of poor management of the money, and also probably due to theft! I wouldn't be surprised! I don't think they are debt because of a lack of money being put into the NHS!! The best way for the NHS to save money is stop treating people for free who don't even live in this country! I think it is ridiculous how people come to this country for treatment then go back home! Also there should be some law in force whereby the NHS redeems the cost of treating people from another country by getting the money from the government of the country the person is from and then it will be up to the government of that country to get back the money of the person who came here for treatment. It's not right when people who do not contribute to our economy are allowed to receive free treatment!! And nor is it right that a hospital can pay a foreign doctor to come work here for 5 days!! What are wrong with the doctors in this country??

Labour mismanagement that's what!!! I feel there is a secret agenda here somewhere. Knowing full well, the public have a soft spot for the NHS,by letting it run down to the point of collapse, they can then plead more tax without a backlash from us. Crafty move, but typical of Labour!Surely after having a Labour Government for so long,we must be aware of the tricks, lies, spin,to get what they want?
There is the issue of having an open door policy as well. People flooding into the country from poorer areas, are arriving with illnesses which they are unable to get treated in their own country, due to lack of medical facilities/costs, etc. Once here, they are able to use the NHS. Would the Government tell us the NHS is in crises due to immigration? I doubt it!

when does anything make sense with the nhs?
The report predicts a massive shortage of staff is on the way and warns that thousands of new GPs and nurses will be needed.
But it also recommends ways of cutting salaries and comes as many areas are already imposing a recruitment freeze in a bid to balance the books.
The document, outlining the NHS pay and workforce strategy for 2008-2011, shows that by 2010-11, the NHS will experience a shortage of 1,200 GPs, 14,000 nurses and 1,100 junior and staff-grade doctors.
There will also be 3,200 extra consultants that the NHS cannot afford to pay, as well as an excess of 16,200 allied health professionals (AHPs), health scientists and technicians.
The draft, seen by the Health Service Journal, sets out controversial ways of bringing down the national pay bill for NHS staff.
It says that pay for nurses could be dictated by local market rates, and that unemployment could be used to "create downward pressure on wages".
Workers would also be able to trade fewer hours for pay under plans set out in the leaked document, which was written on November 27 for discussion at the Department of Health's December board meeting, according to the journal.

The news item said there will be a shortage of nurses in 3 - 5 years time, not that there is a current shortage.

More government hype. of course there`s a shortage in the caring professions and always will be. It is a labour of love for very little recompense for overworked staff.
