The web site I looked at said that it still remains a mystery since the wreckage of the plane was never found. A popular theory is that the plane was accidentally bombed by RAF bombers over the English Channel.

The truth is that no one knows exactly. In 1944 the war was still raging and the English Channel was a "no man's land" filled with both German and allied aircraft. The aircraft in which Glenn Miller was flying may have suffered a mechanical fault causing it to come down in the sea or more likely been the victim of a patrolling German fighter plane. Because of the war conditions it was not possible to conduct any form of search and so this question will never be answered in a definite way. No matter what happened on that day the world lost a great musician and he will always be missed.

Alton Glenn Miller (March 1, 1904 — presumably December 15, 1944), was an American jazz musician and bandleader in the swing era. He is widely recognized as one of the genre's best-selling performers from 1939 to 1942 and fronted one of the most well-known "Big Bands." During World War II, while traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France, his plane disappeared in bad weather. His body was never found.

Best I recall nobody ever determined what actually happened. Air control just lost track of the flight and all that anybody could surmise is that the plane went down, with no survivors. That was the last of Glen Miller, but, of course, his "Big Band" music has passed into classic music history.
