The min is the smallest:

min = 1

The max is the largest:

max = 9

The median is the middle value when they are arranged in ascending order:

median = 7

The mode is the number that occurs the most frequently:

mode = 8

And the mean is the sum of the numbers (64), divided by the number of numbers (11):

mean = 64/11 = 5.81

Are those the 5 numbers you want?

Ah well, I guess not. I looked it up and hunneebee has the right 5 numbers, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-number_summary.

I gave you 3 of the 5 though. ;)

Q1 = 5
Q3 = 8

First, rewrite them in increasing order

1,2,4,5,5,7,7,8,8,8,9

The 5-number summary is the min, Q1, median (or Q2), Q3, and the max.

Min and max are pretty easy, the first and the last.

The median is the number in the very middle. Since there are 11 numbers total it is the 6th number, which is the first 7. There are 5 numbers before the 7 and five numbers after it.

Q1 is the middle number in front of the median. Since there are 5 of those, it will be the 3rd number, which is 4.

Q3 is the middle of the numbers after the median, and since there are five of those it will be the 9th number, which is the 2nd 8

1 2 *4* 5 5 *7* 7 8 *8* 8 9 See how it divides them into even chunks?

Min = 1
Q1 = 4
Median = 7
Q3 = 8
Max = 9
