say " Oooh an awkward silence, now quick say something before it gets wierder" The other person will laugh, and more than likely that will be a conversation starter. Or talk about your dream vacation, or dream car or some nonsense like that.

Movies, books, school, teachers, politics, music, people you know, celebrities, television. The list is endless, but one really good way to keep the conversation going, is to ask the person you are tallking to, questions about what he likes and dislikes.
Listen to what they say, and answer any questions they may have. Just relax, nothing wrong, if there is a silence betweet you. There is nothing worse, than someone, just rattling on and on, saying absolutely nothing.
A nice breather, works well, so don't worry about it. Just take your time, and think about what you want to say next. While prattling on, isn't good, neither is a really long silence.

Any open ended questions...
As long as you can't answer yes or no to a question the person is forced to come up with a response.
Instead of asking, "Did you have a good Holiday?" ask, "What did you do on your Holiday?" or "What was the best part?".
If only monosylabic answers follow then you my friend have found a boring person.
Good Luck

That would be "awkward" silences. Talk about things you have in common, sports, music, childhood, school/work, family, etc.

Talk about something that interests you or try to ask them questions about themselves. I'll talk about movies, music a book I read etc. Just don't talk about the weather, that is a dead giveaway!.

what is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you?
Have you ever been snowboarding or wanted to try it?
Do you like to go hiking, camping, to the beach?
What do you think of them saying we have one less planet?
Have you ever tried to play a joke on someone and have it backfire?
