I LOVE your spelling of awkward! Very creative.

Don't be afraid of small talk. Play a little game of "I Spy"--just look around and comment on stuff. Really, don't be too profound--you'll stress yourself out if you try to be clever when you can't think of anything.

I was once trapped in a waiting room for, like, 2 1/2 hours with only antique magazines for entertainment (yuck. There wasn't much to love in those magazines.)

But I found some things I thought were interesting, like some paintings of George Washington that were being auctioned off, starting at like, 15 million dollars. So I pointed them out, talked a little, and it helped break the tension among all us waiting around.

If it starts a conversation, feel free to look like a dork or a fool. Lame is fine if it gets people talking.

You can just start a conversation by asking that person about a subject. For example, you can say "What do you think of Italian food?". Stuff like that. Just avoid the weather.

Everyone watches T.V. or goes to the movies. Ask has anyone seen a good movie lately. Or ask about a specific movie.

just be creative and be yourself. dont ask questions you are not interested in.
but you can open a subject, maybe you companion will answer, and you can discuss....

but also. if you have to think hard what to say for each other.. maybe you are not connected very well.... so maybe it doesnt worth the effort to think about...
