but I don't recognise any of the names I supposedly sent emails to! I'm afraid it's spyware or a virus or something waiting to happen, but can you delete from Outlook without opening them?

You can just delete the messages when you see them in your Inbox.

Probably what's happening is that some spam-bot someplace is sending out messages and forging your e-mail address as the return address. Occasionally, one of them bounces, and the server at the other end sends a notice back to the address where it THINKS the message came from ... and thanks to the spammer's forging efforts, YOUR address is where the server thinks it came from. Stinks, doesn't it? :-)

At any rate, if you don't recognize the user/domain name where these messages are coming from, it won't do any harm to delete them.

Most of the Outlook Express error messages are due to problems with the internet connection, not the software on your computer.

There's been a rash of spam sent out pretending to be failure notices in the past week. Just ignore them.
