I know that both of these are anti-depressants but a friend of mine takes Paxil and tried Elavil for migraine prevention. (Her doctor made her try both.....She's still on the Paxil.....)

What would happen if she took the Paxil she is supposed to take and took one of the Elavils later on in the day? What side affects would it possibly cause? Can you mix the two?

Elavil is a very old anti-depressant, and some have found that it helps with pain--others say it helps them sleep. It is in a different category than Paxil, which is in the category with Prozac.

When my doctor wanted me to switch from Elavil to Paxil, he let me take a gradually lower dose of Elavil, and gradually higher dose of Paxil. For me, Prozac and later Paxil, did nothing, so I was put back on Elavil. Some people, however, say that Prozac or Paxil made them a new person.

I would tell her to ask her doctor about taking Elavil and Paxil together--it may depend upon how high the doseages of each are.

You should NEVER take medication unless your doctor says it's safe. In her case, she needs to call her dr or pharmacist and make sure that the strenghts of the drugs and doses that she's taking is safe to take together. I work in a pharmacy, but I am unaware of the dangers that it would pose not knowing the strengths of her drugs.

If her doctor told her to I'd think it was OK.
