We are animals and we are drawn by the scent of the musk of our partners.
I think it is on a less than concious level, but that we are drawn a bit by this as well as the natural musk of her body and private areas. Performing oral sex on my partners is about the visual pleasure it gives me, the taste and smells of area and the sounds and movments of her pleasure, all combined.
Personally, i'd rather be there when she's clean but not just outta the shower soapy clean. just a very light scent of the day.
We have not had sex a lot during her time, but we have and it was different but nice, too. Since pro-creation is not the only reason to have sex, I think it is reasonable too assume that probably indeed on a less than totally aware level we do recognize a uniqueness in the musk at that time and one that some may like and others may not.
There are some perfumes and colognes that turn each of us one.
I know men and women who prefer partners only just after a bath or shower, then others like us who sort of prefer a normal amount of scent and still others who like it just a bit stinky, so can we detect scent? Yes. Can it turn us on? Yes.

I'm not all that sure. I can taste when it is close during oral sex but never the smell. It wouldn't seem right because a male animal has no reason to have sex with a menstrating female since it doesn't result in pregnancy. Its not productive as a species.
