Of course! They are trying to convince themselves. I think it takes therapy to gain true knowledge of the person you really are. Some people's perception of themselves is so distorted that I think they need a straight jacket. I can't imagine going through life not knowing my faults and flaws.

The reasons why people lie are myriad. Most of us would never lie if we were not pushed into a corner.
Can you pass judgement on a guy who in order to get that job stretches the truth?
The other case where we might compell people to lie to us is when we think we are having a conversation with them whereas we are really indulging in an interrogation session. Let us allow others their privacy. They will tell us in time what they want us to know.

Obviously they do. To convince themselves? That's tough, becuase you are what you make yourself....
To deceive others? I'm sure. Every girl who ever wore make-up is deceiving others about her appearance. There are plenty more examples.

If you don't believe any of that, then let me re-phrase my answer to "no" becuase I'm a gigantic psychic and super-powerful fire-breathing dragon who can eat god and poop out eternity for $2/hour with a baby's vomit hanging under the mistletoe during summer on Mars. That's the whole and nothing but the truth. I never lie. Any questions?

I think it is convince themselves that what they are saying is true, no one want to admit they feel they are a failure, so they lie about the things they do no like about themselves.

I'm sure they do. Myself included. But then again. Think of it this way. If I make the statement that I am the most sexiest man alive. I might not be attractive to you. But in my minds eye I could think I am the greatest thing since slice bread. So, I don't know. Just a thought if you will.

I've heard that adult children of alcoholics lie when it would just as easy to tell the truth, so consider the family dynamics of the liars.

Yes. I heard someone once say that they had to give a glowing report about their child because he/she owed it to their child to always give a wonderful opinion when in reality he/she was quite blind to the activities of the kid.

Yes and when they do it bites them in the bum; I personally don't. I'll be myself no matter what even to the presense of ridicule.
