They probably won't call your old job unless you list them as a reference, and I don't think you'll be doing that, right?
You might want to tell the new employer about the mistake that you made and explain how you have learned from it and are going to do a good job in the job you are interviewing for. That way they will see that you take responsibility for your mistakes (a positive thing), are willing to learn from mistakes (a positive thing), and are always improving (a positive thing).

Depends on what you did. If the new employer checks references, he will find out more than likely. It may also depend who in your old employ they talk to. If the calls go thru a secretary who maybe doesn't know why you left, you may get an o.k. reference. If you have a friend at the old job, maybe you can fudge a little and list THEM as a contact at that company for a reference. Most applications will ask who to contact at the last place of employment. If it doesn't you can list someone anyway. Most will also ask if they may contact the last place and you can reply...NO, which I think doesn't look good, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. Some places don't even check even though they ask about last employment. They just see on the application that you worked for whoever for so long, etc. Someone who has a new job every 6 months or a yr is NOT someone I would want to hire and probably would not check OR HIRE. If you had some time at the last place and you say you left for personal reasons and forbid them to check it might be o.k. (Let them form their own conclusions) I personally would not kiss anyone's behind for a job. If all else fails you could tell the truth (again, depends on what you did). If you stole, for instance, it would be suicide to tell this but if you turned the former employer in for harrassment or sexual abuse or unsafe working conditions, that would not be so bad unless the NEW emplo yer has something to hide too in which case I wouldn't want to work there anyway. Lastly, lie(not a good practice though, but if you are desperate.). You can list any phone number to call (unless your last employer is like a BIG giant corp and they would know) to anyone's home or cell. They would have to answer the phone with the name of the business and identify themselves as if it was a legitimate business( Hello, thank you for calling Shell Oil, this is Marlene, may I help you?) iF YOU DO GO THIS ROUTE, LIST THE CONTACT NUMBER AS A DIRECT NUMBER TO THE CONTACT AND NOT A MAIN NUMBER FOR THE
COMAPNY or it could backfire. (BEST NOT TO START THIS BALL ROLLING IF AT ALL POSSIBLE) They may find out later and fire you for lying on the application. GOOD LUCK

Be honest. In the interview bring up what you did, why you did it, what you learned from the experience. State that you are ready to move on; to do the best job that your experience and skill will allow.
If you admit what you did, are contrite and sincere you may get another chance. It seems to me that you would be in a better position if you acknowledged the problem up front, rather than having the issue arise and surprise the employer after you're hired, which is generally grounds for termination.

don't use your boss as a reference use another person, a previous employer is not allowed to give out any information that will cause a new employer not to hire you. They might not give you a reference but they have to verify your title, and date of employement -
someone at that job must of liked you, use that person as your referece
and really one bad reference and 3 good ones is still fine...

It depends on your previous employer. Some do not give out information as to why you were fired or quit. But apply to a new place and be honest. Someone will hire you.
