The requirements that must be met to become the president are outlined in article 2 of the U.S. Constitution. To quote:

"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

So in other words, there are three requirements:
- born in the United States
- at least 35 years of age
- have lived in the U.S. for the last 14 years

Oh... one more:
- win an election!

And here's where the current president has some unusual goings on. According to the 12th amendment:

"The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President... the person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed..."

Which is an important thing to note in the whole process. It is the ELECTORS and not the general population who vote for the president. In our current president's first term, the majority of the public did not vote for him at all. If it were up to them, he would never have taken office. But it's not.
