Free promotion / advertising of your website is possible and it's very "Effective" if you have a plan.
Most people fail in promoting their websites because they don't have a plan.

Advertising on Yahoo! is actually against the rules. My suggestion would be to sign up to Google's Adwords, and 'buy' the keywords for your website (costs money though). Make sure you add your website to as many search engines as possible (FREE), such as Google:

There are many more available on the net. Alternatively you could try link swapping with another website, or free advertising such as on related forums or MySpace.
