If the beach is what you're after, check out the Texas Gulf Coast. It's more affordable than Florida, and they have some wonderful beaches at Corpus Christi and even on Galveston Island (although Galveston is the closest major Texas beach to the Mississippi River, which makes the water a lot darker and muddier). If you want a cabin in the mountains, check out Yellowstone in Wyoming or take a trip to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

If you are looking for a very high quality vacation for the lowest price, the Tampa Bay area of Florida is your best bet.

First, your lodging.............I recommend Homestead Suites. They have very very clean, well laid out, and inexpensive rooms that have kitchenettes in them. You can get a room at one of those for as little as $47 a night if you book online at http://www.homesteadhotels.com/

The best locations are the Brandon location (10 minutes from Downtown Tampa via the Crosstown Expressway), and the Clearwater/Largo location (Ulmerton Rd., off of I-275). Either location puts you in close proximity to everything there is to do in the area.

Next, the things there are to do...........Obviously, the beach is the biggest thing. Clearwater Beach is the #1 City Beach in the U.S. Best time to go is during the Sunset Festival at Pier 60, which is every day of the year starting 2 hours before sunset.

In 2005, the #1 beach in the United States (Hawaii included) was Fort DeSoto County Park's North Beach. Caladasi Island was #4. One of my personal favorites is Pass-A-Grille on St. Pete Beach.

Next, of course, you have Busch Gardens in Tampa. More information at http://www.buschgardens.com/

If you like to party, you have Ybor City and Channelside in Tampa and Baywalk in St. Petersburg. Also the tiki bars on the beaches (my favorite is Ka'Tiki on Treasure Island).

If you like shopping, International Plaza is the biggest and nicest mall in the area. But they also have about 18 other malls in the area. Best beachfront shopping in Florida is at Hubbard's Marina at John's Pass on Madiera Beach, and on Gulf Blvd. in Clearwater. You also have the Greek Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs.

St. Petersburg and Tampa has alot of museums. You also have Sunken Gardens in St. Pete, The Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa, Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, and many other such locales.

So, in my opinion, Tampa Bay, where I've made my home, is by far the best of the options you are asking about.
