I just purchased a baxter external disk so I could put a lot of my pictures and things that take up space on my regular c hard disk. But I need to know how to transfer all my data off my windows xp home edition on to this disk also in case I have a problem and lose things that I do not want to install over and over. How do I do this.

Windows XP comes with a backup program but you might need to launch it from the Start/Run box. In there type: "ntbackup" and press or click OK. Do NOT include the quotes. This launches the utility in wizard mode. You can do it via this wizard or "Advanced Mode", which is like a regular program interface.

I have a similar arraignment purely for backup reasons.

Recently I had a computer crash and found out that Windows backup didn't work that well. I recommend you use WinZip instead.

Simply connect your external hard drive to your computer via a Firewire or USB connection. Then take the files you want to transfer and zip them down to a compressed format (which takes less room). Do this on your computer and then transfer the files to your external computer. Make sure you include an unzipped and working install file version of WinZip so you can unzip your files.

In case of a crash you will have to reinstall the Operating System (in your case Windows XP) then access the external hard drive and install WinZip on your computer. Then transfer the files you need to restore and unzip them.

WinZip works by taking the unused space in each sector and other unused space in programs and cramming the programs down to use all that unused space and to put multiple files and together.

It is possible to save the configuration of your Operating System, but I would rather concentrate on the files. In the advent of a major system crash you are going to have to reinstall the Operating System to get it to work properly, and then you will have to reinstall all of your programs. You should have your programs backed up on CD or DVD because they don't change. Your data changes so you want to make sure you back that up on the external hard drive. I recommend a weekly or monthly backup it all depends on how much your data changes.

All you need to do is to locate the files you want to copy, and simply drag- and- drop them onto your external disk. After that, you can delete all the files you copied to your external disk off of your PC disk.

Did the new drive come with backup software? You will need some time of backup software, well easiest way to save everything in case something messes up.
