I'm looking for a new pet hamster, but I'm not sure on what the differences are in these 3 types. Size? Color? Care? What??? All comments are helpful and appreciated!

all three are actually from the same species Mesocricetus auratus.
-well syrina hamsters are the most common type of hamster. usually tan or white in color and VERY nice and people friendly. it is best to keep them alone, not together or in a group.
-black bear hamster grow MUCH larger than the syrian and tend to be a litttle timid at first but warm up to people quite nicley. they seem to be the most friendly when fully grown but can become over-weight fast and then die at an earlier age. usually they are black, [duh] and perfer solitary confinment.
-teddy bear hamster are much more able and likely to catch a illnesss of diesease, and usually die at a younger age.teddy bear hamsters usually have long hair that require brushing [for males] and it isharder to keep up with.

goodluck and personally...syrain hamster are the easiest and most fun to have. have funwiht your new pet!

Actually, all 3 that you mentioned are Syrian hamsters. The original hamster, that later became our pets, came from the semi-desert area of Syria, hence the name. These hamsters were quite large, and had a tri-colored coat (black, dark orange, and cream). My first hamster, Shannon, was one of these first hamsters when they came on the pet market. In the years since, breeders have played with the looks of the hamster and came up with two new types and many colors, resulting in the Teddy Bear, the long-coated variety, and the black short-haired variety we know as the Black Bear. They are still all Syrian hamsters. All of these hamsters are around the same size now, even the tri-colored original-type hamster.

I had 4 hamsters when I was in my teens. You know about Shannon, but I also had Teddy, a beige Teddy Bear; Casper, a white Syrian of the original type; and a dwarf, named Mijit.

they're the same. most hamsters in the store are Syrian, unless otherwise noted as dwarf, or Russian. teddy bear and black bear are just ways for the store to get more money out of you. one difference is color. black bears are black. pandas are white and black. but they're all Syrians.
