I really want to be a city carrier . . . it's right up my alley. I'm hoping to hear from actual carriers if possible.

If you submitted a resume you should have put expereince on it that was related for the position you are applying.(even volunteer work will help if related) Excelent references help too.(Clergy, police, teachers, and not just friends)
You would have also included a page stating why you want the job(sell yourself) and why you think you would be good at it. ie: good people skills, friendly , outgoing ,energetic, etc. AND most important, it's not what you know it's who you know. Any time you have a friend or aquaintance that allready works for them that will reference you it is better. Maybe you could have asked your local postman if he would reference you. Your score on the civil service exam will bear weight too on hiring. Even if it didn't ask for a resume, I would have submitted one along with the application. Check back with them often(but don't be a pest) to see if the position has been filled yet. If it hasn't, ask when you may call back to check and who you may ask for. If it has, ask how long they keep the applications on file and active. If it for example, 6 months, and even though it has been filled, call back in a month anyway and ask that it be reviewed or if you can do anything to update it. If the person doing the hiring knows you are interested enough to keep in touch constantly they may be more apt to look at your apllication more closely than the one who just drops it off and never touches base back with them. Hint: Veterans will get preference on most any civil service job They get extra points on the test to begin with.

My sister in law is a postal worker. She told me that a great way to get into the post office is to also apply for their temporary help. They also have rural carriers. You may want to inquire about both.
