I have a leopard gecko and it wont let me pick him up at all. I have had him a few months and he will eat crickets out of my hands but if i try to pick him up he will snap and bite my fingers. Clearlly it doesnt hurt but its super annoying and i have almost given up entirely. What should i do? How can i make him comfortable with me handeling him? I had another gecko years before this one and he was a great pet to handle. I dont understand!

Not all geckos are the same. Out of my 9 leopard geckos 2 of them wont let me touch them without squeaking, waving there tails, and biting. The other 7 dont mind it so much but 3 out of those 7 love to be handled. I belive it depends on there interaction from birth. Ive learned that the more they interact with you at a young age the better they are as adults. This isnt always the case tho as i have had a few adults that have been handled from birth and still hate to be touched.

You can keep trying to handle him and it he might just come around and let u start holding him. You can always just leave him be and enjoy him from his tank.

hope this helps....

Most geckos are not handle friendly. There is just something about their charactar that they dont like being touched. I have an assortment of different reptiles and geckos. and not one of the three kinds of geckos i have like to be touched. off all of them my crockodile geckos are the most ok with it, but still. not a handle friendly pet. The store you bought it from should have told you that geckos are not hand friendly. Sorry sweety, if you want a reptile you can handle and touch, this one aint it. Good luck, and dont ever handle them, because they dont like it you could stress out your reptile, so take it easy if you MUST handle your friend

I don't understand either. My leopard gecko just died and he did not like fingers at all. There really is no wrong as long as you stay away from the obvious wrong things, grabbing it by the tail, squeezing it too hard [like a golf club, not too hard but hard enough that it wont get away]. Another thing too is probably they dont like skittish people. I hated when mine jumped at my fingers and even though i knew it couldnt hurt me i always pulled back.

A lot of good answers hear so I don't have much to add except that you can always try handling when cold. All coldblooded reptiles will react alot slower and less aggressive when they are cold so try first thing in the morning before he gets to warm. Might help. Oh and btw I am in no way telling you to make him cold in order to try this. Improper heat sources can kill.

Pets are like humans they all have different personality traits. Sounds like you went from a friendly to a grouchy gecko. I'd contact your local reptile club and ask for advice.

start out gettiing him out of the cage with a towel so he desn't bite you.
you can let him loose on the bed or on your lap and try to make him comfortable. give hom time hes only been around for a couple of months i have 2 bearded dragons and they were like that too when i first got them. now i can do anything to them. he needs to get use to you picking him up thats all.

Just keep trying to handle him and try to stroke him along his side this calms almost any lizard down don't try it with a snake though lol.
