You need to run the motor with your timing light connected the same as all other motors when doing this procedure. The difference with this and many other GM motors of this era is you have to disconnect the timing connector that comes from the PCM as the PCM actually controls the timing after initial start up. To do this you have to locate this wire. It is NOT located in the motor compartment. It is located under the passenger dash area usually taped to a big wiring loom that you can access without removing anything. There is nothing else that the tape here is for, it is just to keep this connector held. Some of these connectors found their way up behind the glove box, so you might have to remove the box portion of the glove box to get at the connector. The wiring color for this wire is brown with a white stripe, I think. While the motor is running, disconnect the wire and just leave it apart while you inspect and adjust the timing. The motor usually will not run as good and the SES light on the dash will illuminate almost immediately if you have disconnected the right wire. You actually can give it a little bit more than the zero degrees that it states, but I would suggest no more than two degrees before. After finishing your timing adjustment, re-connect the brown wire. You should clear the code by disconnecting the battery for ten seconds. Recheck all by starting and confirming no SES light while running and you should be good!

Kinda confusing huh ?? You goin to diy you need a CHILTONS or HAYNES repair manual. Do yourself a favor and invest a few $$ and get it right. You will need a timing lite also.
