I've heard the phrase a few times, but I don't really have a discription of Emo. I believe it means being a crybaby and feeling sorry for yourself. I seem to be switching emotions a lot. I do not think I am Emo, but I would never label myself. I don't think any of you would, either. I try not to label other people, and I have never called anyone Emotional. I don't think emotions are a bad thing, though. They're just showing that you care, aren't they?

Seeing this is really quite interesting. I wonder how different it would be if I inquired about optimism?

Yes but "emo" has had a negative connotation. The stereotypical "emo" cuts their wrists and are suicidal. I think that is stupid when people label others or even themselves that way. Everyone has emotions, so why not show them? We do not have to hide them. Emos are not the only people who show their emotions. It's just another one of those silly stereotypes like Jocks don't have brains and all Rockers do drugs. When people these days refer to emo it is not in a good way, therefore they do not mean that emos are caring. They mean emos are horribly depressed and suicidal which is a sweeping thing to say.

Buddhism makes a distinction between negative and positive emotions. Put simply, it's good to be happy, it's bad to be mad (in either sense of the word.) Negative emotions are considered poisons.

Men and women will probably see this question different, with more men agreeing with the above, more women disagreeing.

Of course, some schools of Buddhism, like Tantra or Vajrayana, allow for the transmutation of poisons, which then become useful. This might be like being angry about a social injustice and using that anger as motivation to make improvements through politics or otherwise.

From a biochemical perspective, negative emotions seem to short circuit, or at least color, rational thought processes, which is probably a bad thing.

Positive emotions might also get in the way of logical thought, but that's probably not such a bad thing. An excessively happy person might foolishly tip toe through the tulips, and smile at people that don't like them. O well. C'est la vie.

There's obviously nothing wrong with being an emotional person, or expressing feelings. However, I do think there is something more psychologically wrong with those who are Emo, those who label themselves so - the cult followers or sheep. That is not good nor healthy. They are just a step below Goth.
Just be who you are. There is no need to follow the crowd or become a sheep as part of a labelled clique.

I don't think that expressing your emotions is a bad thing. Emotions are feelings like joy, sorrow, fear, hate, love, etc. Some people are more emotional than others but this doesn't make them better or worse.
Emotions are bad when they harm your mental and spiritual health. For example hate - now this is a harmful emotion both for you and the other person. Groundless fear is also a harmful emotion (excepting the instinct of self preservation).
Emotions are just a way to show how one feels. Of course, some control over ones own emotions comes in handy sometimes.

The word "emo" or anyone who would even label themselves with a word that has such negative connotation deserves to be kicked in the nuts.

Everyone has emotions - the ups and downs of living life. However, as a sensible and responsible human being, one needs to learn to control their emotions, and never act on them in a matter which could prove harmful to themselves, or to others.

It's common sense - even I can get emotional sometimes, yet I don't let it get the best of me and whip out my razor to start hacking my wrists. It's self mutilation for some sort of mental satisfaction. See a doctor people, it's not healthy.

Technically, Emo in today's definition (being overly emotional, suicidal tendencies, unique hair, lots of black, hearts, stars, whiny music) isn't true emo. Emo began in the 80's as a form of punk music where the singers revealed their deep emotions. It was more about the music, less about "I'll never find somebody to love me, so I may as well die." As with most things, teens latched onto to it, warping it from it's true roots. Now it's most often the Hot Topic brand of Emo that you see on the streets and most of these kids aren't taken seriously except by other emo kids.

As for just being in touch with your emotions? No there's nothing wrong with it. But you also have to be in control of your emotions. Never let one emotion rule your life, you've got to balance.

(the first two links are a bit of history on the beginnings of Emo and how it has evolved, the third link is a bit of a joke... how to dress emo)

Those who go around calling themselves 'emo' and OMGGGG!!!-ing all the time deserve a good beating. They are 'emo posers'(as 'true emos' call them). Thats even worse than being emo itself. All they do is pretend to have problems, and even the smallest thing is the biggest deal for them. If they hate life so much, then WHY are they still here? Such people are not needed here on earth to ruin other people's happy day.

In other words, being Emo is basically taking normal human emotions and exaggerating them to no end(yes, it includes being a crybaby) .

Its just a stupid stereotype, very few people are actualy truly emo, but most people just go around calling themselves emo when all they want is just attention.

In these days, science is dominated.
Because we get much stuff through science.

Industrial revolution cause scientific discovery.
And the country what experience early industrial revolution is dominated in the world.
For example, England and United States.

The major character of science is rationality.
So people have thought rationality is important.

And the emotional opposites rational.
So people think emotional is not right.

However, this kind of thinking was made only 200 years ago.

I think modern society use much machine.
We do not have to the heavy work.
We just do emotional work.
Maybe, 50 years after, emotional work is major labor.
Therefore, important of emotional will increase.

Many years ago when I started out in the workforce, the guy who hired me made an offhand remark: Do you see that little girl?, he said pointing to a data entry operator, she never throws tanties and never runs crying to the bathroom.
I guess it was his way of telling me emotional outbursts are not appropriate at the workplace and I have never indulged in it ever.
Having emotions are part of being human as is having regard for your fellow humans who could be distressed by emotional
outbursts. There are other ways to deal with strong emotions.
