April 18, 1942 Col James Doolitle and 79 brave american pilots took off in 16 specially fitted B-25 bombers from the deck of the
HORNETT aircraft carrier and succeeded in dropping bombs on Tokyo, doing some small damage but lifting the spirits and hopes of the Allies that were very low at the time. He proved that we could strike back , but many pilots were lost. 69 returned and many were forced to land in China which was friendly to us and an ally at the time. This upset the Japanese public very much as they thought they were safe and invincible so it was a major win in the psychological battle but a minor win in military damage.

Well... the war didn't effectually start until 1942. Pearl Harbor was attacked in December of 41, and by the time war was declared and a (new) fleet mobilized, it was 42. The fighting that occured in 41 was mainly Japan attacking us, not the other way around.

In the Pacific Theater, the battles were mostly "island-hopping," beginning in late 1942. Major naval battles which helped turn the tide of the war in the Pacific were those of The Coral Sea and Midway.
It wasn't until 1945 that Okinawa, considered by the Japanese to be a part of their "home turf," to borrow a contemporary expression, was invaded by the Allies. Once victory was declared in Europe (May 8, 1945), the US began to gear up for an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of that year led to the surrender of the Japanese.

It was December 7th of 1941 and war was declared against Japan the next day.
The first retaliatory strike on Japan came on April 18th, 1942 when James Doolittle led an aerial strike force against Tokyo...
James H. Doolittle (1896-1993), American aviator and army officer, who led the first U.S. air raid on Japan during World War II. Born in Alameda, California, Doolittle served in World War I as a gunnery and flight instructor. After the war he was chief of experimental flying for the U.S. Army Air Corps, and in 1922 he became the first pilot to fly across the U.S. in less than a day. During the 1930s he managed the aviation department of the Shell Oil Company. On April 18, 1942, in the early stages of World War II, Doolittle led his celebrated bombing attack on Tokyo, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and promoted to the rank of brigadier general. During the same year he was placed in command of the U.S. aviation forces taking part in the invasion of North Africa, and in 1944 he was given command of the Eighth Air Force, stationed then in England and later in Okinawa. He became a lieutenant general in 1944. In 1946 he retired from active military duty and returned to the Shell Oil Co., from which he retired in 1959.
