When I put the key to the on position, i get a humming noise coming from the engine. And if I press the accelerator it makes a hissing noise that is scaled to how much I press on it. The car is a 2003 Suburu Forester with 70k miles. Don't understand why anything at all should be running when the key is only in ON. Any help or ideas to whats happening would be appreciated.

The noise does not seem to stop at any time. It starts coming from the car after about 5 seconds after going into the ON position. Then just keeps going.

does the noise stop? it could be fuel pump running or the electric fans running.

My first wager grew to become into the solenoid on the starter, yet once you replaced that, then it is not going the reason. however the clicking noise is the solenoid beginning and closing, so seek for a loose or undesirable connection after that. in line with risk a loose battery cable to the starter, or on the battery terminal itself. The spare key's purely a accident, Ford has no such protection gadget that deals with keys or ignition. (I also have a 'ninety 9 ZX2). start up searching for undesirable connections first....it is low-fee and intense possibility of being the concern.

when the ignition switch in in the ON position it means all your electronic stuff is on and you are draining your battery. The humming is most likely your fan. the hissing noise may just be the pressure in the pedal.

most likely either the fuel pump or the fan.

probably nothing to worry about.

it's a reminder so you don't lock your keys in the car
