What usually works for you? I know everybody is different but I'm trying to get ideas that can help when feelings of sadness and hopelessness hit the hardest. They can be so hard sometimes !!! No thoughts of harming myself or others though.

To alleviate a depressive episode, you should do activities that you enjoy. If you like exercising, then exercise. Don't ever do things that you don't enjoy because chances are you are going to get even more depressed.

I don't think thoughts of harming others, or yourself, are depressive thoughts. Those are thoughts of manic behavior, even if they are stemmed by depressed thoughts.

I have been depressed for a long time, taking medications and tried several kinds of therapy. The thing that always helps me the most is something that will stop me from thinking about and worrying about myself. Focus on people you can help, and worry about their problems more than yourself. That works. I volunteered at schools and other places for a while, and it helped me a ton. Do something where you can see the good you can do.

If you do get manic feelings, and ever want to do something to alleviate your depression that will hurt yourself or somebody else, stop. It's not your fault entirely, but there is something seriously wrong with you. Go to a doctor or see a counselor, clergy, anybody who can listen to you and help you to stop thinking about hurting anyone.

A lot of people in the prisons are people who are just like me and you, but who took themselves out of their depression with manic behavior that is illegal and harmful. Don't let yourself go there. You aren't prison material. You can do this, pull yourself out of the black hole and see the sun again. You need to find some kind of activity to put all of your male aggressive behavior, for me it was weight lifting. That helped my depression a ton. That or any other sport will help you, in more ways than one. Good luck.

there is a formula for overcoming depression which works for me:

1) feed the intellect - read, watch info tv, play stimulating games

2) nurture spirituality - church, yoga, etc.

3) exercise - even if just a walk

4) eat properly - balance carbs w/ proteins & fats

5) get w/ friends - support is so important! even if only on a chatboard

6) do the things most loved - throw yourself into a satisfying project

7) if still not smiling, talk to a doctor - lexapro can work wonders!

I suggest you see a doctor ASAP. I suffer from depression and IT IS TOUGH. I'm on medication now ,have been for years and it the only thing that helps
Let me tell you somethin'. I rather be physically sick than be mentally sick.
If you get the proper meds and they make you feel better, DON"T STOP because you are feeling better. They ARE the reason you're feeling normal.
Please get the proper advice..

I do something like drawing or reading or something else to keep my mind off the feeling (aka when I'm in class and I can't draw or read at that moment), but when I can't I'll just wait til the feeling goes away or release it by punching at something (in karate class in school) and letting it all out there (but surprisingly I get happy in that class before it even starts, usually). But I think someone else who feels depressed should talk to someone close to them, keep their mind off it by like doing something they truly enjoy, or release the feelings by exercising your body.

exercise, even though you don't feel like it, you will feel better afterwards. OR go for a walk. The fresh air works too.
