I see americans defending jews right and left... in the news, on the radio, on this site... everywhere...

Now I don't remember america getting anything from israel and I don't remember them doing us any special favors. They seem to be a powerful country with arguably the best trained military, high tech weaponry and a nuclear arsenal to talk out every arab country twice over.

They don't need us and they've never done anything wonderfully memorable for us so why all the fuss? We treat israel like a little sister country when in reality she is a 200lb ***** with claws like daggers.

Don't take this as jew bashing... I don't really care about the middle east that much to either hate it or love it. I figure if we didn't need their oil they'd be forgotten just like africa. I just don't get the blind allegiance to israel!

Please don't gave me any idealist bulls--t answers. I want answers with a realist, pragmatic, reasonable answer.

Who the hell cares that Israel gives women rights and other arab countries don't. There are many countries that you have rights and freedoms that we don't support like Russia, Belarus, China, North Korea....

The Jewish people has lived in the land of Israel for about 3000 years, and only they have ever had a sovereign state there. Even under the years of Byzantine, Arab and Turkish rule, there was a continuous Jewish presence. There has been a Jewish majority in Jerusalem since the 1840s.

After the defeat by the Allies of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, the League of Nations (forerunner of the United Nations) allotted mandates to Britain and France, with responsibility for developing states for the Arabs in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, and a national home for Jews in Palestine. Thus, these major Arab states owe their origin to the same international acts as those that led to the Jewish state.

The area the Jewish national home was established in was then known as Palestine, and the Jews who settled there were accordingly known as Palestinians. Until 1948, the present Israel Philharmonic was the Palestine Orchestra, the Jerusalem Post the Palestine Post, and so on.

Palestine was never a country, but a somewhat vaguely defined geographical area. No occupying power ever made it an independent state, or established a capital in Jerusalem. Under the Ottoman Empire, it was part of the vilayet, or province, of Syria. The Arabs of Palestine had no historical, national or cultural identity distinct from other Arabs of the region. The term "Palestinian" never carried its present meaning until the 1960s, even for Arabs.

The Jews own practicaly ALL the news papers and the largest in the associated press so of course you won't read or hear anything bad, because they write it.Little was said about Syria until our vice-prsidents daughter was sent there to create trouble then they were in the news every day. Everything Isreal has was given and promises to give more by President Carter. They do serve as the only country in that regions that likes us but lets face it we buy that love. It says in the Bible Those that bless my people, they I will bless and seeing the christian beliefs in America this goes a long way with our being SCARED of them. I'm sure they are good for something I just don't know what.

Take a trip to any Middle Eastern country EXCEPT Israel (you have to do this first because if your passport shows you've visited Israel you might not even get in the country!). Take notes on what you are allowed to say and do, PARTICULARLY if you are a woman.

Now go to Israel and compare your notes. You will find that while you are you do not have quite as many freedoms as in the U.S. you are still being allowed MOST human rights --- which the Middle East does not.

That is why we support them.

Let's see... Israel is the only alley the U.S has in the Middle East.
Israel is a tiny country (smaller than New Jersey) with a population of six million, and is surrounded by 22 Arab countries with a population greater than 200 million... It is the only democracy in the Mid East, and the only Westernized country in the region.
Israel is a world leader in technology and invention;
these global companies do most of their R&D there. IBM and Intel each have three R&D centres in Israel; Microsoft established its first non-American facility there, and Cisco Systems has built its only non-American R&D center in Israel. Then there is Motorola, which has its largest R&D site in Israel, and News Corp, whose company NDS develops those neat interactive technologies for digital television. There are many more.

It's called a friendship. They sure like our aircraft. Maybe we're just being altruistic and helping a friend that is under constant threat from those who would seek to destroy it.

Why do we need to 'get' anything out of such a relationship?
