I have a wi-fi capable laptop and also a desktop (no LAN card but I'm planning to have it installed). If I apply to a DSL service, I would like to be able to use both the laptop and desktop online, with only 1 DSL account. I heard I could do this with a router or set up my own network at home. So in this case, what type of connection is better for me? Will the wireless DSL work on my desktop too? If I choose the wireless DSL, can I use my laptop online anywhere in the house? I'm kinda confused.

Usually when you purchase the wireless equipment from the broadband company, the modem and router are built into the same box. Also, regardless if you go through them or save money getting your own wireless router, it will have both kinds of ports - ethernet and wireless antenna.

Therefore, you should have the option how you want to connect your desktop. Keep in mind that although being wired is at least twice as fast as wireless, it doesn't matter for your internet connection which is going to be slower than both.

The only time it matters is when you plan on sharing large files between both PC's. That's when being wired you would notice a big difference.

I'd keep the desktop connected over ethernet (wired) and the laptop over wireless.

You only need 1 DSL account. You need to buy a wireless router like a Lynksis, D-link, something like this.

You put the router behind the modem. you just need to set up the Router with PPPOE settings and put your account settings in the router.

You should be able to a signal from the router in a house. The further away you go the weaker it is.

Make sure its a G router, (802.11g)
