i know the feeling, i've been there... the trick is to learn a song that has easy chords (A, D, E, Am, etc...) there's this song ("a horse with no name"-it's an old folk song) that has only 2 chords kept repeated on the whole song. then-the one i love by R.E.M.-the stanza chords are Em, D and the chorus chords are G, C, D i think, i'm not sure of the chorus...because it's been along time since i played a guitar...
and another trick is that, move the chords to the D scale instead of using the original chords of the song. but there's a disadvantage, the son either goes higher or lower...
and if you keep doing that and eventually with some practice you'll learn all the necessary chords you'll need in a song...
i hope this will help you...

Okay, you just started playing--you need to learn the basics before you move to chords. Learn the notes first, then the chords. But when you get to the chords, switch back and forth between a couple chords repeatedly until you feel comfortable with your speed. Keep doing this daily and it will eventually improve your speed.

Start with the basics of course - you know; time, scales, tuning, etc. - But try to incorporate it with the music or style you like to listen to, or at least know, that makes it easier to get into practicing when you don't want to practice. Especially, when the alternative is "Go Tell Aunt Rhodie." Stick with it no matter; what others say, how you feel, how bad you think you sound, yada, yada, blah., because, before long you'll start to see, hear and feel the difference. Check out some guitar tab sites for some songs that you might recognize and learn how to play tab, but learn how to read music first. Don't be like a lot of new guitarists who can only read tablature. You put some sheet music in front of them and they're lost.

Did anyone recommend practice? Practice switching back and forth 2 chords at a time. When you get them down, add another one. It takes more than a couple of days, it takes time to develop "muscle memory". If you have a gig this weekend, you might want to cancel it.

start by learning all the chords...it will probably take much more than a few days. then once you know most of them, switch around a little faster at a time.
=)

If you enjoy it you will learn,if it seems tedious and difficult then you probalby wont......Do this, this is what I did in the beginning, switch from ....say G to D then go back to G again....C is kinda tough on the fingers at first, but try to go from G to C once in a while.....before you know it,you should know all the major chords in a few weeks and you'll be able to play them without looking.. Goodluck.

Hey man- that's wonderful that you're playing guitar now. But please remain patient, because it will take you a long time to become extremely skilled and fast. It will take years for that. I really encourage you to practice playing. If you want to become an awesome guitarist, you can do it- but it will take time, patience, practice, determination, and hard work. Practice for an hour or more every single day, and in a year, you will be playing quite well! Good luck.

practice and don't give up after getting frustrated. my friends and i started playing 4 years ago, and some of them gave up while me and maybe one other friend kept at it. and now when those friends that gave up see me now they wonder how i got so good. and another piece of advice watch some people play and watch thier fingers and how they position them because i remember one time i was having trouble with a chord and it was because my fingers were positioned in a wierd way. good luck with guitar.

the best way is to buy a chord chart and start with the major chords and play them over and over again... it just takes time...ive played for 3 years and over time it will work...
