I know that many wear athletic supporters, or jocks, but do they use cups?

nah man, i play football, and not even the weakest players wear cups, it takes away the comfort, iussually go out with just my boxers or the tights(gurdle) then wear the football pants. there are not a lot of news about guys getting hit in the jewels. theres no real concern about it.

Actually most pros do not wear cups. Tom Waddell said on his radio show and again on Pro Football weekly that pros for the most part do not wear protective cups. With hits and tackles coming from all different angles it is painful and uncomfortable to wear them and give very little protection from tackles. Their function is to stop a foot from coming straight on or a ball from hitting you there. you notice how rarely you see football players adjust themselves compared to a baseball player? I found a quote. "If you want to get made fun of by your teammates," says one current NFL player, "wearing a cup would be the fastest way to do it. In all the games I've played -- on every level of the game -- I've only caught a knee down there once or twice. It's not the best feeling in the world. And no one wants to have millions of people watching you cupping your (cashews) in agony. But if someone came out wearing a cup, the rest of the team would be like, 'What's going on with this guy?'"

To those of you who think it's obvious, you do realize that rugby players don't wear cups, right? And that sport is probably the closest thing to American football.

Well, if you want to avoid a very painful hit, you usually wear a cup.
