We've all heard the old phrase "forgive and forget", and you've probably also heard the question, Is it possible to forgive without forgetting. But my question is a little different. If you do something you deem as "bad" and in need of forgiveness, and you ask for forgiveness then forget about it, does that mean you are forgiven? Christ said I will forgive who I will forgive, but of you is required to forgive all men. He also said (I paraphrase) that once He has forgiven someone, He remembers it no more. So from these two scriptures I gather that we should forgive even ourselves. If we try to forgive ourselves, then give that desire (of forgiveness) over to God (so that we're not burdened with it any more), then forget about it and are no longer burdened by the guilt associated with it, are we forgiven (if not by God, then at least by ourselves)?

I think it is important to forgive BEFORE you forget. The faster you forgive the easier your burden is laid off. If you keep on waiting, then you will forget or the thing you need to forgive will have lost it's purpose to you.

You can forgive and forget all that you want to, but there is always the case that if it is something that really hurt you badly then you will forgive but something about the forgetting part just want let you let go of what you have forgiven.

Most of the time forgiving is forgetting but when you hurt a person in a death kind of way then you may be forgiven but not forgotten of the painful memory of a loved one.

...... not necessarily... Forgetting means you forget the wrong thing that has been done. You are forgetting the emotions you have felt, be it sad or painful. I know people would love to forget those kinds of emotions, but for me... I'd rather live with my memories. I want to remember all my painful ones as well as my joyful ones... as painful memories have helped me become who I am.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Forgive & forget. Live & let live.

I don't know where I am going with that, but I didn't quite get where you were coming from.
