I would like to know the answer to that too. I do not know the reason. I am in a bi-racial family, and no one seems to know the reason why.

does it really matter? is it all black because no one of another race is allowed to participate OR is it all black because no one of another race want to participate? there are many many shows, awards, games , commercials ,pagents soap operas, that have no black, Hispanic, Asian, etc. these shows came about because dark skin was not allowed in pagents, they were on a few soap operas as maids. when they were on a show it only showed a negative side. what would you do if this was the case with your race. you would create shows that show in in a positive way, shows that show that you are just as beautiful, shows that show you can sing, shows that show you can dance. the next time you see a movie , a commercial, a game show you count the number of black people that you see. the movies that are out now how many black people have starring roles if a role at all. as for the school that opera open they are in Africa in a area that is mostly black. it could be that case as it is here in American that the white people there do not want to mix with the black people. (by the way ther are white girls in the school) i think the real issue with the school the Oprah open is that it is Oprah now everyone want to be associated with it. why wasn't those black girls allowed to go to the all white schools in Africa.

I think it is a matter of the blacks having been so downtrodden in the US for so long that they are trying to 'catch up'. Actually, if any other race besides Caucasians were to do the same thing, I don't think the blacks would have a problem. I know that there are Hispanic awards, schools, shows, pagents, etc. and no one has a problem with it.

The serious answer is that all of those institutions were created during periods when blacks were excluded from "mainstream" institutions. Blacks were not allowed to compete in the Miss USA or Miss America pagents, so the Miss Black America pagent was created. Blacks were excluded from white colleges and universities (and elementary and high schools as long as we're making a list), so black schools were founded.
Your understanding about what those institutions do today is a little off base. Every historically black college and university welcomes, enrolls, and admits non-black students. The faculty at historically black colleges and universities is, on average, 35% white. Greater percentages of non-black students attend those schools, especially the professional (law, medicine, dental) schools each year. Non-blacks routinely receive awards at the BET and NAACP image awards programs. Have you ever watched? I'd suggest that far, far more non-blacks have been honored at "black" awards ceremonies than blacks have been honored at "mainstream" ceremonies.
And the truth is that unlike white schools that once barred blacks, the traditionally black schools ALWAYS admitted non-black students. It's just that very few whites dained to attend them. But Native Americans, Indians from the sub-continent and other foreigners have long attended historically black schools. My dentist is Indian (from India), and he attended Howard's dental school in the late 60's. One of my doctors is white and he graduated from Howard's medical school in the late 70's.
Your observation about the school Oprah opened in South Africa also seems odd. 80% of the people in South Africa are black and the vast majority of them are poor. But contrary to what you said, she did not limit enrollment to black students. She limited it to poor students who otherwise wouldn't get a top quality education. Most whites in SA are much better off than blacks, so of course there would be few white students. But there are "colored" students attending and they aren't black (at least not under SA's social definitions) and I saw at least one white student who was attending.
If you really want to understand more, you'll do a little web searching and check your facts. I hope that you do and aren't just using this to attack black people.

Because there are still awards that a Black person will not win unless they open a circuit strictly for Blacks. It's because of the way of the world. If there was never slavery or current racism, it'll be different.

My child, my white supervisor asked the same thing and when I told her its harder for a black person to shine in this world that is why they always have constant support. Our kids just fall into negative stereotypes about the gangs, the bling the pimps and the whores. When applying for a job you are always wondering if you will be hired or if your blackness will keep you back. You feel hurt because sometimes you are just not given the benefit of the doubt because you are black. I tried explaining this to my white supervisor and she still did not understand and will never understand because she is just plain ignorrant. At the end of the day who feels it knows.

It's just how it is. African Americans have had to embrace a strong cultural identity amongst themselves, because quite frankly, they haven't been given many chances to assimilate in this country. It might seem kind of hypocritical in this day and age, but it is still understandable. There is a psychological phenomenon known as the outgroup homogeneity effect, which simply says that as soon as a particular group is identified as 'different' whether the observer is black seeing white or white seeing black, there is a tendency to group all members of the 'other' group as having similar tendencies and attributes. After being 'outgrouped' for so long, you can't really blame black people for having a great deal of value placed on their racial identity.

Oprah Winfrey handpicked on Sunday 73 South African disadvantaged girls, the first of hundreds of girls who will attend her new school just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. It's an all girl school not an all black school.
Just wanted to bring to your attention that there was a white girl amongst the girls that will be attending.
to answer you.....
It's because we weren't getting alot of airplay (tv,radio) at the time BET began so we decided to start our own channel so our talent can be exposed as well. You can't say we are racist for this, we play videos by every artist regardless of race. Ask Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Fergie...and so on.
Like American Bandstand we werent being exposed as artist as much as other races so we created SOOOOOOOOOUUUUUL Train.
Or like the United ***** College Fund was designed because at the time we were not allowed to attend your schools.
Alot of things were designed at the time for us because during that era we were limited to alot of things.
But since things have somewhat lightened up we no longer have to create organizations for just us...All are welcome.
Hope this helps you understand

Um yeah - I don't think an all white awards show or all Eskimo Spring Break party would fly here in the US
But - the argument for differant treatment than other races is the slavery issue.

i think that the we are just trying to support and try to show others of our race say respect. And it is not just Black people that do this, hispanics do the same thing. I also think that white have little things of their own to. I think that the Miss America pageant are for white people abecause it is rare that you see a Black Miss America, and before you say that Halle Berry and Vanessa Williams were Miss America, they were stripped of the tittles, so I think that they do not count.
