The HOSTS file? Your HOSTS file is outdated anyway. This is a file located on the c: drive that was added in the days of pre-56k dial-up. When you type www.yahoo.com (for example) into your browser, it calls a DNS (Dynamic Naming Services) server for the IP address. In the super-slow old days this took time. So the wonder geeks created the HOSTS file. It stores the IP address of frequently visited web sites locally on your harddisc and loads it into memory at startup which sped up access time. Even with a 56k modem, it's not a huge though noticeable speed increase. If you have broadband you can just open it in notepad, erase everything below the # signs, save it and then right click it and set it as 'read only'.
A lot of anti-spyware apps check the HOSTS file because malware like spyware and trojans alter it to keep you off sites like bitdefender.com or to redirect you to other sites.
Anything ending in 127.0.0.1, for example, is a loop-back address for the local host (that's you). This gives you the 'Page not available' error.
Of course, you can use it yourself to block advertisers like doubleclick. Banner adds just show the above error. Faster page loads and no doubleclick spying.
I hope this long post helps. Good luck.
