Wikipedia has a very complete answer that is relatively short and easy to follow (see soucre below).

Yahoo has a shorter but also a very good answer which I quote here: «This second global conflict (WW II) resulted from the rise of totalitarian, militaristic regimes in Germany, Italy, and Japan, a phenomenon stemming in part from the Great Depression that swept over the world in the early 1930s and from the conditions created by the peace settlements (1919—20) following World War I.»

In short, these three countries attacked their neighbors which fought back forcing other countries (with very few exceptions) to join in on one side or another of the conflict.

Resultat: At the end of the war, millions of refugees were homeless, the European economy had collapsed, and ±70% of the European industrial infrastructure was destroyed. The Soviet Union had been heavily affected, with 30% of its economy destroyed. The colonial empires were destroyed. Some 63 million people, or 3% of the world population, died in the war (though estimates vary): about 24 million soldiers and 38 million civilians.
