I'm a student and I thought it's be nice to try mystery shopping to get some extra money. But I'm not sure of it's success rate. I heard of a woman who gained 7 thousand a month in New York, but that was a rare case. What are people opinions of it?

It depends, when you get a list, there will be some that pay out really well, some payouts aren't worth the time, and others where the link doesn't work.

A good one is Corporate Research International, they usally have a lot and some will pay up to a couple of hundred.

The MSA is a registered group that has a link to all the legitimate mystery shopping programs. Good mystery shopping companies are always MSA approved.

The Sassy Mystery Shopping Site also has a list of companies that provide excellent mystery shopping, I believe just about all are MSA approved.

I thought about getting into it as well. I applied and accepted at one of the companies. Here's what I didn't like:

1) The jobs weren't at stores or restaurants that I really wanted to visit. But if I did, I would probably be there for hours on end. And the mystery shopping company would pay me like $5 for the one assignment. I'm talking things like buying a cell phone (those stores are always nuts).

2) You can't just walk in and do what you want. They give you a very specific list of what you are supposed to do and say, including if you buy anything, or which employee you talk to. You have to MEMORIZE everything they want you to do (no cheat-cheats allowed, else the store might know).

One example...for $5, go into a pet store (huge chain), wait around the dog or cat section for someone to approach you. When they do, ask about a type of food. Were they courteous? How long did it take? Next, pick up a can of dog food. Take it to the register. How were you greeted? Were they efficient? Next go into the grooming salon. Ask someone about pricing to cut your dog's hair. How long did it take until you were helped, etc.

There was NO way I was going to remember...and sometimes if you don't do things EXACTLY as was asked, your paperwork is rejected and you are out your time, and maybe money.

So it takes a lot of time for minimal money. If you want to make money (from what I saw), you'd have to spend a lot of time for not very much money.

Listen up. You will never make a profit mystery shopping. Those are cruel jokes to get your business. The best you will get is a slight discount at a place you never wanted to go. And they will sell your info to spammers. They are scammers looking to make money off you any way they can. One thing for sure, when all things are said and done they will be a lot happier and make a lot more than you. That's the cold hard truth. If you are gullible enough to go after this sort of thing, you will learn too. Its called the school of hard knocks...

someone i know did it for awhile and it seemed she paid out more during her mystery shopping exercises than she received back. they don't reimburse you but once a month, most of them so you are spending more than you get back. i tried it myslef and they always emailed me and said they had stuff in my area, but none of it was nearby, always at least an hour drive, and when i clicked on the links to find out where, a screen popped up that kept telling me i wasn't a member. so i said forget it they cant keep their paperwork straight.
