if you are doing something small, I suggest sculpey (get it from your local art store)... most people like it for cute little dolls and such, but I like to use it for my sculpture... it's expensive, but it works sooo much nicer then any other clay (and the sculpey look alikes are not way near as nice... and not so much cheaper)
you can then mold it and re-use it or simply put it in your oven and cook it till it's done. Then you can leave it as is or give it a finish... like bronze or copper or what ever else.
The other clay I love to use is an oil based clay I get from http://brickintheyard.com/
you can stick it in the microwave (in a microwave safe dish) and it will soften up or even liquefy if needed. when it's in a room temperature it's really firm so that you can carve into it.

Definitely Sculpy. They carry it at places like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Crafts Etc. It fires in a normal household oven.
