Depends on the catfish, but they all are egg layers. Exactly what they do with their eggs varies from species to species.

Wife caught one once and when we got home the ice chest was full of babys it don't lay eggs I guess or at least gaff tops don't.

They lay eggs because they are not mamals. Mamals need to have intercourse or mate, but w/e you classify catfish as, they lay eggs.
