Inventory of what? Software? Home Inventory? Business Inventory?

Definitions of inventory on the Web:

a detailed list of all the items in stock
stock: the merchandise that a shop has on hand; "they carried a vast inventory of hardware"; "they stopped selling in exact sizes in order to reduce inventory"
(accounting) the value of a firm's current assets including raw materials and work in progress and finished goods
armory: a collection of resources; "he dipped into his intellectual armory to find an answer"
making an itemized list of merchandise or supplies on hand; "an inventory may be necessary to see if anything is missing"; "they held an inventory every month"
make or include in an itemized record or report; "Inventory all books before the end of the year"

if your asking how to make an inventory for business, then you need part numbers. The part numbers you choose should be set up in such a way that retrevial of infomation can be performed by whatever categories that you may require, for example, you will want to sort by raw materials, wip and finished goods. In addition you will want to sort further by more specific categories depending on how complex your inventory is. Finally, each item of inventory should have a unit and unit cost assigned to them.

First what are you taking inventory of ? You need to categorize everything before you take things down on paper or computer . Size , color , model number . How many of each . It's tough when you don't have what you are inventorying ....

Does not have to be complicated.

List each item, and how many of each you have on hand. Some Inventories include retail price of each item. You may want to include that if you need to know the value of your inventory.

Make a list of everything in the group of things you want to inventory. Categorize, date, type, size, shelf-life if applicable, etc.
