My take on it is more of a religious meaning. the world is basically the machines and the matrix is what the truth is. everything that we see is all an illusion that keeps us from what is really going on. the world in the movie is all nice and full of tantalizing things that would be considered beautiful or should i say the straight path. it hides the pain and destruction of the reality and neo being the one is the guy that guides us through that path of truth and open our eyes
