You poor kid you got fried in here for not mentioning the virgin bit sooner! OK to regulate your period and stop the cramps etc the pill is probably a better option as you can cease taking it at any time if there are side effects.

I have used long term birth control like this and it SEVERELY messed up my system... and you cant get rid of it once its been injected. It caused me weight gain and mood swings that were so bad they must have been from another planet.

Now that I am older I have found that I can fix my period probs by taking vitamin supplements - it turns out all my period probs were because I was lacking certain necessary vitamins and minerals. Have you looked into that? Email me if you want to know exactly what vitamins and minerals, I know what you are going through sweetie.

One of the major side effects of depo provera is the irreversible loss of bone density with prolonged use. This may also lead to the higher risk of osteoporosis in women. Therefore, it is always recommended that you should not use this contraceptive for more than two years. Women are also advised to exercise and take in a lot of calcium while using this method.
Weight gain is another side effect that has been observed in more than 70% of women using depo-provera. The gain may vary from 5 to 10 pounds, making regular exercise all the more important.

Other depo-provera side effects include:

Irregular, heavy or loss of menstrual cycle. The chances of getting periods reduces the longer you take the injections, though normal cycles should resume within 14 weeks of stopping the birth control.
Headaches
Nervousness
Mood changes
Breast tenderness
Decreased sex drive
Acne
Hair loss
Muscle pain
Heart palpitations
It is rare for someone to be seriously effected by this contraceptive. However, there are some complications associated with its use, including:

Jaundice
Blood clots
Severe allergic reaction
Infertility
Severe depression
Heavy or prolonged vaginal bleeding
Additionally, there is conflicting evidence to suggest that use of depo-provera may increase your risk of breast and cervical cancer, although no definite conclusions have yet been drawn.

Please do not go on DEPO. What doctors ommit to tell you when you are looking into getting on depo is that they only recommend that you be on it for two years at the very most in a lifetime. It will take your period away---there have not been studies explaining what the health effects of this is. It can cause major weight gain (in most women it does cause weight gain). It leaches the calcium out of your bones. I know someone who was on it for three years and when she was 23 years old she went through menopause, so, now for the rest of her life she is having to take horomone replacement therapy. If you go on line and look up the Depo shot you will find that there are many lawsuits pending against them. Please, PLEASE do your research first.
Also once you get off of the shot it can take 6-18 months for the drug to get out of your system. When I got off of it, it took over a year before I got that time of month back.

Once you stop taking the depo shot you may not be able to get pregnant for months or even years.. so if you take the shot, you may not be able to have babies when you decide that you want them. I tried to shot, but it gave me such terrible migranes that I had to stay in bed, with the lights off, feeling like i was going to die.... and full of tylenol for a whole day.. and it was almost once a week that i was getting them. Once i stopped getting the shot, the migranes went away. Talk to your doctor about other option. There is something called the Marena.... its an IUD.. a copper plug that is put directly into your cervix.... its about 50$ but it lasts for 5 years. Or the 350$$ one that releases hormones and stuff.. its a 5 year too.... Good luck.. and ALWAYS use condoms!!! the pill, patch, shot or plug will NOT protect against STDs. ALSO..... the shot has been shown to lead to premature bone loss, and osteoperosis. not cool!

The worst thing that could happen? You're 16 and on birth control. Have some self respect and wait until you're older to have sex.

pregnancy for one also STD if you don't use some other type of protection also the depo makes you fat!!!! you really are very young and should consider not having sex at all you have your whole life before you and you don't want to screw it up this early in the game.

If you were my daughter??????? I would kick your A**.
You are too young to have sex. Wait a few years. If the birth control fails you will become pregnant or you could get a STD. It isn't worth it. Wait until you are older and wiser.

My friends girlfriend used to take that and she went from a decent gal to a raving lunatic. Moodswings, depression and low self-esteem, maybe they were not all caused by that, but they went away when she quit.

Oh yeah, she lost all sex drive too...
