I am teaching 6th class about poverty in our world and I would like to give them a poem highlighting the situation but i can't find any? Also if you know of any song/drama that would be great? And is there anyone we could write to to complain about the issue as a class or anything?...Any other ideas are greatly appreciated!

The link below takes you to the videos made by UNICEF that address poverty.

I'm concerned that you may not fully understand the issue at hand here. For example, if you write to the White House and demand that more money be put towards international development, you're ultimately going to have to look at the fact that the war in Iraq is costing enough money to feed the world's poor for a year. Are you familiar with the Millenium Development Goals? The US promised to commit 0.7% of it's GNP to international development, but has fallen far short of its original promise. How are you going to address that when your students have family members serving overseas? How do you plan on explaining to your students why African farmers can't compete in the global market due to US farm subsidies, when some of your students may have parents who work in agriculture?

Rather than write a complaint letter, why not get the kids brainstorming ideas of what they can do to help reduce poverty? They could fundraise and send the profits to an organization like Oxfam or UNICEF, or they could target local poverty by organizing a food and clothing drive for a local homeless shelter.

Definitely contact Oxfam which has already been mentioned. If they have someone in your area, they may even send a representative to your class with a great deal of information about world poverty presented in an interesting way. They will at least send you information.
"Oliver" or "Oliver Twist" is poverty from another era.

My favourite is "Two Scavengers In A Truck,
Two Beautiful People In A Mercedes" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. I did it for GCSE in my english class - and though I was 15, not 12, I still think it might be helpful - it also highlights poverty in different cultures which might be interesting. I'll find a link...

Hope that helps.

Access the Southern Poverty Law Center via the web. They have some amazing stuff there, which include other web sites, literature ideas, lesson plans, and unit ideas.

This is not poetry, but your kids would love it and it might make an impact. Why don't you take a field trip to the local drop in center or soup kitchen and take a tour and meet some of the people there?

if you're willing to do something besides poetry you could put together a powerpoint or something to show the kids how poor people really live. It is sure to affect them more if they can actually see how poor people live.
