It's an outrage!! And they have to pay for half their kit as well - if they want the decent stuff not the crappy government issue......... I think a big change is in order!!
Especially now we've cleared our debt to the US.....there's loads of extra cash lying around, which should be spent equipping the countries defence - the do more than enough for our country, the country should do more for them!

From my experience as an old soldier (1957-1965) I would say that the British Army has always been ill equipped and badly housed. Both the married quarters and barracks of many regiments were then and probably are now, sub-standard.
My father now dead, who fought in WW2 described the Brit Army as an 'absolute shower' and wondered aloud how on earth it had ever achieved a victory. His only answer to his own question was that Tommy Atkins was entirely responsible for its historic victories all the way back to Waterloo and beyond.
It is time to reward our soldiers and give them high quality housing and a massive pay rise.

I think its digusting that people who are risking their lives should have anything but the best.
Bush has done a lot to hurt the conitions that each soilder has live in. I don't see how he can be seen as a pro military president when he does nothing but limit the benefits of people in the armed forces.
I may not agree with us being in the conflicts we're in now, but the soilders should be taken better care of.

Well, since Blair has taken over as PM, he has only seen to his and his family's comfort, be it at 10 Downing Street or abroad on his 'free' holidays. So, how can he see beyond his nose about others' comforts?
For the presnt Govt, armed forces are the people who are obliged to do what the Govt wants from them. They are treated like dirt, when it comes to rewarding them. After all they are not celebrities, rubbing shoulders with the 'who is who' in the Govt, so how can you expect Blair's Govt to know about their sheer existence, leave aside their basic needs and comfort?

hi Hookit - sure I extra than likely do! fairly considering our troops were dragged into Iraq by Blair. Given a number of our American Cousins perspectives and thoughts in this (have merely placed some ignorant and ungrateful American in his position) i imagine OUR priority (SOD each person ELSE'S)must be to carry our Troops abode today!!

I've seen the footage of the living conditions....well, I bet prisons and other government institutions that hold not-so-civilised people are 5 star hotels compared to these dwellings.

i agree. they need to be treated like gold for what they are doing.. and hello? the military is not always voluntary. there are DRAFTS and then also people who have no where to live and no other options in life get stuck signing up, while rich kids with college funds dont have to. and also, if they are VOLUNTEERING their lives for us, isnt that all the more reason we should treat them the best???? YOu are very ignorant.

...NEWSFLASH! The military is all volunteer, and they know before they sign up, that they (infantry) may have to spend quite some time in less than ideal conditions.
You probably shouldnt enlist, the military hates whiners.
