Do they have any real power or do they essentially serve as a symbol? I'm not trying to put them down. I just wondered.

No real power, but the Queen now has over 60 years experience, and has met all the great political leaders in that time. I would inagine she is a great source of advice.

No, this useless institution serves no purpose whatsoever, the sycophant,s claim they help tourism , which is nonsense as France with no Royalty has a far greater tourism industry, very few tourists ever get to see this not too bright, dysfunctional family.
If they were turned loose they would be totally unable to support them selves even in MacDonalds, can you see it" Do you want to supersize that?"

The opening of parliament is about it. Even the speech on that occasion is written by representative(s) of the leading party(ies)

Nope nat really... they act more like ambassadors i suppose the government decides how the country is run and the queens signs all the officially stuff sayen she allows it... even though she hasnt really got much choice i suppose.. but im not british but i still think the queen is amazing.

they have no power but they have a great infulence on the way things are run and who is elected (as do most extremely weathy people)
