I bought my wife a brand new firebird. It was with my money that i had prior to our marriage. No special occassion. I knew she wanted a black firebird to replace her old camaro but she didn't want to be the one to have the next new vehicle.

Since i was still driving the same old pickup i'd had for nearly 15years. I'm not the type of person that needs a new vehicle every year or even 20 years for that matter. If it runs and doesn't cause me alot of problems i'm happy to drive the older stuff.

Define my "own money."

I make all the money in our family. My wife owns a home business that looses (on average) $30 a month. What would constitute my "own money?" Do I suddenly get an allowance for being the bread winner?

Before we were married, I never bought her anything as large as a vehicle. Power tools, but no vehicles. So that would be a no for my "own money" before we were married. Since being married, we did buy her a car. The occasion was she started her business and needed to be able to get arround. But I don't know if that counts as my "own money." It wasn't a present, we went shopping for cars together, she found one in the price range we wanted she liked, and we bought it. So I guess since I make all the money in the house, yeah, I bought it with my own money... but that would mean she's never bought me anything with her "own money" since we've been married. She married me with a few thousand dollars in debt, bearly a hundred dollars in the bank. I'm not complaining, I don't care, I'm just trying to figure out how your question can possibly apply.

I bought her two cars with the premise she would take over the payments. The first one was a wedding present. The second because she tore the first one up. She treated the vehicles just like a child would a puppy. Neglected them, tore them up and stopped making the payments.

Needless to say, that was the last time I did that.

It's not HER money or MY money, it's OUR money, and all major purchases are carefully and dispassionately discussed before they're made. In fact, she's due a replacement for her present vehicle, and will begin shopping for one this spring. When she finds what she wants, we'll both go look, talk about her needs and whether her choice will meet them properly and economically - and by July she'll have a newer vehicle.

How could I? MY money and HER money are the same thing.

Besides, neither of us has the authority to make a purchase like that without talking to the other about it.

I would FLIP if she did that for me. Even though with the best of intentions. We are in good financial shape.

About 8 weeks ago my husband bought me an '06 Chevrolet Cobalt. It was with "our" money but the car was from him to me, and it is paid for, no payments required.
