Beg Pardon... Who was president in 1992, what party controlled Congress when Andrew took out most of southern Florida? What happened there? How fast was FEMA on the scene, how many happy campers after that disaster? Crap happens, in the final analysis, after the government failed (as usual) and the insurance companies do their tapdance (what a surprise) look at Florida today... The only ones I don't hear complaining are Cubans (FL) and old hard core Cajuns (LA).... Hmmmm?

Welfare states are not correlated with political leanings. In fact, southern states recieve more federal dollars than they contribute to the feds coffers. Many liberal states, such as CA, OR, WA etc. recieve much less federal aid per capita than do other states, contrary to what you allege. The amount of federal dollars per capita directed to a state is more closely related to that state's wealth. The table I have linked to shows this. The states that recieve the most federal money relative to what they contribute are Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alaska, New Mexico, and North Dakota. All red states by the way.

Interesting article. Here's my favorite quote:
"It's terrifying: We're doing the same things we have in the past but expecting different results," said Robert G. Bea, a professor of civil engineering" Just like the new planned surge of troops to Baghdad, eh?

You make me sick. Those fellow American citizens of ours are struggling, many have lost everything. The insurance companies are screwing them and you want to criticize them for not putting their houses on stilts. Maybe they can't afford it, ever think of that? What is our President doing to help them? What did the republican controlled congress do to help them? Your total lack of concern for your fellow citizens shines through brightly, you should be proud. Maybe they can get those trailers our government bought and use them as a foundation to raise their homes. You and people like you should fall off the face of the earth, and if you can't do that, go to Iraq and fight this war you guys love so much.
