Yamamoto was the commander of the Combined Fleets of the Empire of Japan. That is he was the equivalent of Fleet Admiral Nimitz of the United States Navy.

He was of common birth and was adopted by the Yamamoto Clan as a boy. He served under Admiral Togo who won the Battle of Tsushima in 1906. He was wounded and lost the first three fingers of his left hand.

He was the first captain of the aircraft Carrier Akagi and a lot of the way that Japan fought the War was planned and developed by him. He was sent to the US in the 1920's the study at Harvard and there got his beliefs that Japan should not fight the US in a War. in 1940 that belief got him into trouble with the radicals in the Japanese Government and he was sent to the Combined Fleets command for protection.

When told that war was inevitable he planned and gave the orders that sent the Japanese Fleet to attack Pearl Harbor.
His famous quote was that Japan would run rampant for Six month maybe a year after that he wasn't so sure. He never gave the giant of great resolve speech.

Yamamoto was insanely obsessed with protecting the emperor so after the Dolittle Attack he planned the attack on Midway, a complex and detailed battle that demanded the the US fleet act just as he planned for it to.

After the defeat Japan was on the defensive and he was travelling to visit the troops in the Solomin Islands in 1942 when he was killed.

Yamamoto was worshiped by his men and none dared to tell him they thought there was aproblem with his plans. But he was also right more times then he was wrong and his drive and persoanlty drive the Japanese Navy for the first two years of the War in the Pacific.

Actually not, the actual plan was done by subordinates. He was against starting a war with the USA, cause he knew we would eventually kick their face off. But, when ordered he did his duty and was such a great leader and fighter, we had to take him out.
