Socialism, in its purest form is not a bad thing. Equal access to healthcare, housing and education. It does fly in the face of capitalism, though...and thats the tough part. I don't think that anyone has a problem with their government providing assistance for the basic necessities, but they do have a problem with their government having a say about how financially successful they can become.
Many countries exercise a form of socialism, and it works well - if you don't mind the taxes required to support it.

Large corporations are an example of socialism at its best. Whenever socialism advances capitalism it an ideal situation. An example is public education. Public education is a social program that returns tenfold of the public's investment through greater productivity.
A national health care system that is funded with public money, managed by private health care management companies, and doesn't turn the medical industry into socialized medicine would also create the same return.

are you kidding? Individual freedom and responsibility are both on the endangered list! As Government grows (and it inevitably will) it destroys our freedom. Most teachers in colleges are socialist, Just try to present an argument for individual freedom and responsibility (the things that made this country great).

Socialist ideas are acceptable to 60's era hippies who think "the man" is out to get them. Grow up and embrace democracy like a real adult.

Absolutely, and it's dangerous.
Extremism is always dangerous. Unfortunately, the pendulum has been pulled WAAAAAY into Capitalist/Fascist territory. It would be nice if we could be rational, but unlikely. Yes, you will see one extremism replace the other, and people will suffer for it.

Unfortunately yes. Too many Americans don't stop and think enough for themselves to realize that Socialism is giving up freedom. Whether you have a dictator or not doesn't matter.
