I'm having day surgery soon, will I have to book holiday for this or can I have it off sick? I have no idea how it works. Also I have a couple of outpatient appointments. I don't want my boss to think I have to much time off but at the same time I don't want to use all my holiday on hospital visits. Where do I stand ? I'm in a new job and haven't proved my reliability yet. Thanks x

Hi, doctors dont need to issue a 'sick note' unless you are off work for 5 days, so you can self certify for these five days (declare you were sick on a form, when you return to work) you dont have to prove you were ill, it's about trust, and honesty, not catching out the small guy.

You are entitled to take time off for hospital appointments, usually two hours payed. You should tell your employer you are off sick so that they know of your current health conditions and so that your work doesnt make your health worse, they should be able to offer flexible working hours for you too. Your employer is responsible for your health while you are at work, and you need to tell them anything that might aggravate things!

You may only get SSP sick pay, but you should not book holiday. Time is too valuable, when are you going to relax??? Everybody who works in the UK is entitled to full payed holiday, at least 20 days a year, and increasing up to 28 days.

Talk to your human rescourses department, and if you find your medical condition to be personal, or embarassing, you only need to inform personnel, and they will inform your management.

You are entitled to a lot of rights at work, and you should join a trade union for help and advise on employment matters.

Some companies have "excused" and "non-excused" absences. Others have a strict policy of providing a set number of days for absence, be it a hospital stay, or sleeping in.

In your case, with the surgery and outpatient follow-up, all certified by a doctor's statement, I would think that it would be "excused". You certainly didn't plan, or had foreknowledge of the surgery, when you accepted the job. Consult the HR Department as to policy and guidance.

chat with your employer. some give special leave. some will allow sick. no hard and fast rule. as a new employee a bad sick record never looks good. if you cant speak with your boss try hr or a union rep if you have one. hope all goes well for you.

it will be a sick day as long as you get a doctor's note that says you could not work that day- turn it in to HR or your boss

If as you say you are new to the job you probably aren't entitled to paid sick pay yet. I suggest you talk to your employer, tell them the truth, see what they say.
