I just got a cable modem. I tried connecting to modem using an Ethernet cable but the software didn't detect a connection. I was forced to connect via USB 2.0 and it worked. My computer has a 10/100 Ethernet card; so, I am at a loss as to what the problem may be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check to make sure in BIOS that the ethernet card has not been disabled. Do the same in device manager in Windows. Also make sure that you have the latest drivers installed for your ethernet card.

Try a diff ethernet cable. Sometimes modems don't work as they should, maybe the ethernet on the modem itself is bad. Try it with another PC if possible.

So your connecting your Cable Modem to the computer.... After you plug in the cable, you should see lights blinking on the card in your PC and the modem. If your seeing lights then the physical layer is connected. Software problems or a incorrectly configured software program... is at the other end of the spectum.

If the lights are blinking then you have connectivity. If not change the cable.
